For years, the world of hypercars has been an arms race, a constant battle to push the boundaries of speed, technology, and exclusivity. And for years, MotorTrend has been chasing the elusive prize: a seat in a Czinger. Now, having completed a three-day road rally in the breathtaking Czinger 21C VMax, I can confirm that this isn’t just another hypercar; it’s a manifesto of automotive madness, a glimpse into a future so alien it makes other supercars look like Ford Pintos.
The Architecture of Audacity
The journey began not in a pristine supercar garage, but in a state-of-the-art aerospace facility in Southern California. The parent company, Divergent Technologies, is a titan in additive manufacturing, a company so advanced that it holds government contracts. Stepping through their doors is like being transported into the 22nd century. Rows of colossal 3D printers fire lasers into powdered aluminum, constructing mechanical components that resemble bird bones more than car parts.
This isn’t just about making things lightweight; it’s about achieving the “Pareto optimal,” a point where any deviation, even a single gram, becomes a liability. Imagine an engineer tasked with designing a suspension component. They don’t sketch; they input constraints. The AI iterates through millions of designs, creating the perfect lattice structure that is both impossibly strong and virtually weightless. It’s evolution accelerated. Entering the Matrix: The Cockpit Experience
Piloting the VMax is not like driving a car; it’s like operating a fighter jet. The cabin feels less like a greenhouse and more like a transparent canopy, with glass sitting mere inches from your head on either side. The visibility is staggering, and the ingress and egress are the stuff of legend. You sit with your legs spread wide on the massive sill, pull your knees into your chest, pivot on your backside, and slide your head under the roof. It’s a maneuver that would make a contortionist sweat.
One reason the sills are so gargantuan is that they house the 2.2-kWh battery packs, two per side for a total of 4.4 kWh. This is not a plug-in hybrid; the car is self-charging. The mid-mounted V8 sends power to the front axle, which features one electric motor per wheel, capable of delivering 500 horsepower.
The heart of the machine is a Czinger-designed 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8, producing a staggering 750 horsepower on standard California 91-octane premium. But step up to 100-octane race fuel, and the output jumps to 850 horsepower. Transmitting the Madness
Driving a hybrid supercar usually means dealing with a jerky, lurching transmission. But Czinger has revolutionized the game here, borrowing from Xtrac’s seven-speed sequential gearbox (used in the Pagani Utopia) and taking it a step further. Not only is the transmission case 3D-printed, but Czinger employs 48-volt electric motors to assist the shift actuators at low speeds. The result? A transmission that feels as smooth as a torque converter in traffic.
Pulling into gas stations, restaurants, and hotel parking lots feels almost…normal. It’s a technical triumph that eliminates the drunken surges common in other automated manuals. The car accelerates with seamless urgency from a dead stop, a true paradigm shift in low-speed driving dynamics.
The Unseen Passenger: Track Performance
Like many high-end hypercars, the VMax features a mandatory second seat. For the first day, I had a co-pilot: Evan Jacobs, a professional racing driver tasked with ensuring I didn’t crash this $2.5 million machine. Czinger claims the VMax weighs just 3,600 pounds. For a 1,250-hp hybrid, this is almost unheard of. Consider the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Asseto Fiorano, the most powerful version of a three-motor, twin-turbo V8 PHEV, which weighs 3,839 pounds at 986 hp. The new Lamborghini Temerario, also a three-motor, twin-turbo V8 with less power, weighs a whopping 4,185 pounds. The SF90 and Temerario are the two quickest gasoline-powered cars MotorTrend has ever tested. If Czinger’s weight claim holds true, they have just embarrassed two Italian legends, all while building their car in L.A., a city known more for movies than hypercars.
The Road Rally: A Real-World Test
The Velocity Tour was designed to showcase the VMax on real roads, not pristine tracks. We navigated winding, weathered asphalt through Northern California’s wine country—the exact opposite of a hypercar dream trip. Following the pack, navigating to lunch stops, and being followed by the camera car all contributed to the experience. Looking back, it was the perfect way to show what most owners will actually experience.
Surprisingly, the VMax handles like a refined exotic. Take everything out of your pockets before you get in—there are no cupholders—and mentally prepare for the attention. Every male between 16 and 24 will be staring, following, waving, and revving. But the ride is comfortable, even plush, and the air conditioning works well.
My only complaint? The noise. It’s not the symphony of the V8; it’s the deafening roar of the wind rushing through the cabin. There’s a near-total lack of sound deadening. While acceptable for a track car, it’s a glaring oversight on a road-going hypercar. After hours on the road, the constant wind noise becomes exhausting. Yes, weight is the enemy, but how much does sound-deadening foam weigh? Ten pounds? Twenty? Add 10 pounds, and you’ll make a world of difference.
The Threshold of Sanity
We finally reached some open canyon roads, and I finally got to unleash the 21C VMax. The throttle went down, the brakes came on, the road disappeared. I’ve driven EVs with this much power, but the weight is always there. The Ferrari F80 has similar power but relies less on electric assist. The Czinger is a different beast entirely.
