Having had the opportunity to experience this engineering marvel firsthand, I can say that the Czinger 21C VMax represents a bold step forward in automotive design, challenging the very definition of what a production car can be.
A Factory Tour Unlike Any Other
My introduction to Czinger began at their headquarters, a facility that feels more like a high-tech laboratory than a traditional car factory. The parent company, Divergent Technologies, utilizes advanced artificial intelligence and 3D printing to engineer incredibly lightweight and strong automotive components. The factory environment itself is a spectacle, with massive printers utilizing lasers to fuse powdered aluminum into complex shapes that resemble the delicate structure of bird bones. This additive manufacturing process allows for optimization down to the last gram, achieving what Czinger calls “Pareto optimal” – the point where any weight change, whether added or removed, results in a net loss.
It’s fascinating to see how this technology is being applied across the industry. In addition to their own vehicle production, Divergent supplies 3D-printed parts to nine automotive OEMs, including Aston Martin, Bugatti, and McLaren. While some of these partnerships are publicly disclosed, there’s a growing sense that even other high-end manufacturers are leveraging this cutting-edge technology behind the scenes. It’s a glimpse into a manufacturing future that feels both radical and inevitable.
Engineering for the 21st Century
The Czinger 21C platform comes in two distinct variants: the high-downforce 21C track-focused monster and the aerodynamic, long-tailed VMax road car. For this particular experience, I was piloting a silver VMax during a three-day road rally that traversed the scenic wine country of Northern and Central California. While the 21C is the designated track version, the VMax offers a compelling proposition for enthusiasts seeking a blend of extreme performance and road-going usability.
One of the first things that strikes you about the 21C VMax is the cabin design. Rather than a traditional greenhouse, the car features a canopy-like structure that places you incredibly close to the exterior, evoking the feeling of piloting a fighter jet. The visibility is exceptional, with glass positioned just inches from either side of your head, offering a truly immersive driving experience. Getting in and out is a bit of a contortionist act, requiring you to sit with your legs splayed out, pull your knees to your chest, and tuck your feet into the footwell before sliding your head under the roof. It’s certainly not the most practical entry, but for a hypercar of this caliber, it’s an understandable necessity.
The interior is equally focused on performance. The sills are unusually large because they house the car’s battery packs. The 21C VMax is a hybrid, with each sill containing 2.2 kWh of battery power, for a total of 4.4 kWh. This battery powers two electric motors on the front axle, delivering a combined 500 horsepower to the wheels. The mid-mounted engine is a Czinger-designed 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 750 hp on 91-octane gasoline. For those seeking maximum performance, 100-octane race fuel boosts the engine’s output to 850 hp. Czinger also plans to support ethanol fuels, which they believe will unlock even more power, though official figures haven’t been released yet.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via an Xtrac seven-speed single-clutch automated manual transmission. While single-clutch gearboxes are often criticized for their jerky low-speed behavior, Czinger addresses this by 3D-printing the transmission case and integrating small 48-volt electric motors to execute shifts at lower speeds. This innovative solution smooths out the often-awkward lurches associated with these transmissions, making low-speed maneuvers like parking and navigating gas stations feel surprisingly refined for a car in this class.
High-Speed Thrills and Technological Prowess
As with many ultra-high-performance vehicles, I was accompanied by a pro driver, Evan Jacobs, for the initial part of the rally. His role was to ensure safety while I acclimatized to the car’s extreme capabilities. While I was allowed to drive solo for the remainder of the rally after proving my competence, track driving is restricted to Czinger employees. However, I was able to experience the car’s dynamics during some “6/10ths” laps at Laguna Seca, which offered a tantalizing glimpse of its performance potential.
Even at reduced speeds, the VMax is an exhilarating machine. The visibility through the side windows is truly next level, making even slow laps feel like an immersive experience. I’ve been fortunate enough to ride in some of the fastest cars in the world, but the Czinger stands out. The feeling of being surrounded by the car’s technology while executing turns at speed is unique. It’s easy to understand why the 21C platform has set multiple production car track records at tracks like Thunder Hill, Sonoma, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club. In fact, the 21C not only beat its own records at Laguna Seca but also reclaimed the throne from the Koenigsegg Jesko Sadair’s Spear with a blistering lap time of 1:22.30 seconds.
One of the most impressive aspects of the 21C VMax is its weight. Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds, which is remarkably light for a 1,250 hp hybrid. For context, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano – a three-motor, twin-turbo V-8 PHEV with 986 hp – weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor, twin-turbo V-8 (though with less power than the Czinger) pushes past the two-ton mark, coming in at 4,185 pounds. If Czinger’s weight claims hold true, the 21C VMax has successfully outpaced two Italian legends in terms of acceleration. This is a significant achievement, particularly considering that Los Angeles isn’t typically known for its supercar manufacturing pedigree.
A Road Trip Experience
The rally route was intentionally challenging, taking us through tight, winding back roads with less-than-perfect asphalt. This type of road presents a unique set of challenges for hypercars, and while I may have initially hoped for wider, smoother roads, I found that the VMax handled the terrain surprisingly well. The ride quality is much better than I anticipated, and the team deserves applause for not making it overly stiff. Even the air conditioning works effectively, which is often an afterthought in performance-focused vehicles.
My only real complaint about the VMax is the cabin noise. While the roar of the V-8 is certainly present, the lack of sound deadening is noticeable, especially during long drives. I understand the desire to save weight, but the difference 10 or 20 pounds makes in cabin refinement is immense. A bit more soundproofing would go a long way in improving the overall driving experience.
However, once we reached the proper canyon roads, I was able to fully unleash the 21C VMax. Just as quickly as I pressed the throttle, I was reaching for the brakes. Even with the added torque of the electric motors, the VMax’s responsiveness is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It truly feels like the car is bending the road rather than rolling over it.
Is This Hypercar Too Much?
After experiencing the full extent of the 21C VMax’s capabilities, I have to say this: this car might be too much for public roads. I hate even typing that, but every time I hit the throttle, the braking zone appeared almost instantly. While I’ve driven EVs with similar power levels, the 21C VMax’s acceleration feels even more intense. It’s a different league of performance altogether.
It corners beautifully and has an abundance of grip, but the sheer power is almost overwhelming at times. It’s a humbling experience to realize that there are still limits to what we can safely experience on public roads. The Southern California canyons are arguably larger and faster than the ones we navigated during the rally, and I can only imagine the terror and exhilaration they would provide in this machine.
Who Is This Car For?
The Czinger 21C VMax is not your average hypercar. If you’re looking for a comfortable, practical daily driver, this is not the car for you. This is a machine built for those who crave the extreme, those who want to experience the bleeding edge of automotive technology. With only 80 units being produced, the 21C VMax is an incredibly exclusive vehicle. Ferrari will produce ten times more F80s, and they will cost nearly twice as much. Furthermore, I’ve heard rumors that the successor to the 21C VMax will feature traditional seating, but the current model offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
