My journey to experience this automotive marvel started with an unusual prerequisite: a U.S. passport. Divergent Technologies supplies cutting-edge components to the Department of Defense, a testament to the quality and precision of their technology. Inside the manufacturing facility, it’s easy to feel like you’ve stepped into the future. The moment you approach the car, it’s clear this is no ordinary vehicle. The design is angular, aggressive, and undeniably futuristic. The door mechanism itself is a unique experience, involving a multi-step process that feels more like entering a fighter jet cockpit than a car. You must first straddle the wide sill, pull your knees toward your chest, and then carefully tuck your legs inside before sliding your head under the roof. It’s a ritual that demands a certain level of flexibility but is ultimately rewarding once you’re settled. The “cockpit,” as Czinger describes it, feels far removed from the conventional greenhouse of a car. The visibility is astounding, with glass stretching nearly to your peripheral vision. Even a ride in a stunt plane doesn’t quite compare to the feeling of being enveloped in this canopy of glass. This unique interior configuration is partly a necessity of design. The sills are packed with batteries, forming the foundation of the car’s hybrid hypercar powertrain. Each sill houses a 2.2 kWh battery pack, totaling 4.4 kWh. While not a plug-in hybrid, the 21C VMax boasts a mid-mounted V-8 engine that charges the battery pack while you drive. The power delivery is where the real spectacle begins. The front axle utilizes a dual-motor setup, each powering a wheel individually. Combined, they deliver a staggering 500 horsepower to the front end. The V-8, designed in-house by Czinger, is a 2.9-liter twin-turbo unit that churns out 750 horsepower on standard 91-octane premium fuel. If you opt for 100-octane race fuel, the output jumps to 850 hp, and Czinger hints at even higher figures for ethanol-based fuels. The Xtrac 7-Speed and the Power of the 48-Volt System Powering the rear wheels is a single-clutch automated semi-sequential gearbox from Xtrac. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Pagani uses a similar seven-speed transmission in its Utopia. However, Czinger takes the technology a step further. Not only does Czinger 3D print the transmission casing, they integrate small 48-volt electric motors to execute shifts at lower speeds. Even without the big-downforce rear wing found on the standard 21C, the VMax demonstrates why Czinger is a force to be reckoned with. The VMax’s new lap time of 1 minute, 22.30 seconds is astounding, eclipsing even the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at the circuit (1:22.56). This performance is particularly remarkable given that Southern California isn’t exactly a traditional supercar-building hub like Modena, Italy. Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds. This is exceptionally light for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid hypercar. To put this into perspective, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Asseto Fiorano—the most powerful version of a Ferrari hybrid at the time—weighs 3,839 pounds despite producing significantly less power. Similarly, the new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor hybrid, pushes past the 4,185-pound mark. The Road Less Traveled: A Hybrid That Behaves The Velocity Tour was a mixed bag of terrain. We tackled tight, winding back roads with lousy, weather-beaten pavement—not the typical asphalt dreams are made of for hypercar tests. Navigating to lunch stops, following the camera car, and simply hanging out with the group provided a different perspective than a purely track-focused experience. At the time, I might have been slightly disappointed, but in hindsight, this is what most Czinger owners will actually experience with the car. The VMax mostly feels like any other high-end exotic on the road. Keep your belongings in your pockets, as the seats are tight and there are no cupholders. Be prepared for constant attention from drivers of all ages, as the VMax attracts stares, waves, and revs from passing cars.
