The $2.5 Million Cyberpunk Rocket: Driving the Czinger 21C VMax
For years, the automotive world has whispered about Czinger, the Southern California startup that promised to rewrite the rules of performance engineering. With its otherworldly design, additive manufacturing, and relentless pursuit of lightness, the Czinger 21C has been a phantom entity, a digital rendering of a future that never seemed to arrive. But as of 2025, the phantom has manifested. I had the rare privilege of spending three days embedded with the company, not on a track—though we did hit Laguna Seca—but on a grueling 500-mile road rally through California wine country.
The mission: to prove that a car built like a high-tech fighter jet, powered by a 1,250-horsepower hybrid system, and boasting a center-steer, tandem seating arrangement, can actually be driven on real roads. The question everyone asks: Is it a viable hypercar, or just a terrifyingly complex piece of performance art? After thousands of miles and numerous near-death experiences (metaphorically speaking, of course… mostly), I can report that the 21C VMax is both.
Factory Fresh: Entering the Belly of the Beast
Walking into Czinger’s Los Angeles headquarters feels less like visiting a car factory and more like breaking into a secret government lab. The parent company, Divergent Technologies, operates in the gray space between the consumer market and the Department of Defense, and the security protocols reflect that. I needed to show my passport to enter, and one of the more exotic R&D prototypes was covered under a tarp, hinting at some classified military application.
During a tour led by the young and visionary CEO, Lukas Czinger, I witnessed the magic of additive manufacturing up close. One of the massive 3D printers looked like a metallic tomb, its interior lasers zapping powdered aluminum into components that resembled intricate bird skeletons. This isn’t just a gimmick; it’s the core philosophy of the company.
Lukas explained that Divergent’s technology has reached what’s known as “Pareto optimality,” the point where a single gram of weight either added or removed would make the design worse. He used the analogy of a rear suspension damper reservoir: the software iterates hundreds of thousands of designs to find the perfect balance of strength and lightness. This is evolution fast-forwarded. While Divergent supplies parts to nine automotive OEMs, only Aston Martin, Bugatti, and McLaren have publicly acknowledged the collaboration. One can only speculate about Ferrari’s F80, whose control arms bear a striking resemblance to Czinger’s signature design.
Under the Carbon Fiber
Czinger builds two versions of the 21C platform. The standard 21C is a track-focused beast with massive aerodynamic wings, while the 21C VMax is the long-tailed, wingless version designed for the open road. I found myself piloting a silver VMax for the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile journey from Los Angeles to Northern California’s wine country.
The Jet Fighter Cabin
The cabin feels less like a car and more like a fighter jet cockpit. Czinger explicitly states that the seating position is inspired by aeronautics, and it shows. While I’ve never flown in a fighter jet, I have ridden in a stunt plane, and the similarity is striking. Glass surrounds you on all sides, offering a panoramic view that’s both exhilarating and terrifying. The visibility is phenomenal, but getting in and out is a comedic ballet of contortion: you sit with your legs facing outward on the massive sill, pull your knees up to your chest, tuck your feet into the footwell, and slide your head under the roof. It’s not elegant, but it’s an experience.
One reason the sills are so large is that they house the batteries. The 21C VMax is a hybrid, with two 2.2-kWh packs (4.4-kWh total) feeding a single electric motor on each front wheel. The car isn’t a plug-in hybrid; the mid-mounted V-8 charges the batteries, but the motors can provide up to 500 horsepower to the front axle, effectively giving the car all-wheel drive when the batteries are charged.
The engine is a bespoke 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 developed in-house by Czinger. It produces 750 horsepower on California’s 91-octane premium fuel. However, dumping 100-octane race fuel into the tank unleashes 850 horsepower. Czinger also claims the V-8 can run on ethanol and produce even more power, but those figures remain unpublished.
The Transmission That Didn’t Suck
For a car built like a spacecraft, the transmission in the 21C VMax is surprisingly normal, and arguably one of its greatest achievements. It’s a 7-speed automated manual built by Xtrac, the same supplier Ferrari uses for the Roma, Purosangue, and SF90 Stradale. Czinger not only 3D prints the transmission case but also uses small 48-volt electric motors to smooth out the shifts. The result is a driving experience at low speeds that feels almost normal. Pulling into gas stations and restaurant parking lots didn’t induce the dramatic surge and dip characteristic of other automated manual gearboxes. Bravo.
Track Time: A High-Speed Dance
As is common with multi-million dollar hypercars, the Czinger team insisted on having a professional driver, Evan Jacobs, in the car for the first day of the rally to ensure I didn’t drive the $2.5 million machine off a cliff. Thankfully, Jacobs later vouched for my driving abilities, and I was able to drive solo for the remainder of the tour.
We made a stop at Laguna Seca, but non-Czinger employees aren’t allowed to drive the VMax on track, even at the relaxed pace of a road rally. So, I found myself relegated to the bizarre rear seat for a couple of “6/10ths” hot laps.
The Rear Seat
If you have big calves or feet, the rear seat experience is less than ideal. My XXL calves were literally wedged between the carbon fiber tub and the seat, and my feet barely fit. However, the visibility through the side glass is incredible. It felt like riding in a stunt plane, a novelty I’d only experienced once before in my extensive driving career.
Putting It to the Test
Jacobs managed to convince the Skip Barber Racing School staff to let him take the VMax for a couple of full-tilt hot laps. The ride was nothing short of brutal. The most intense hot lap I’d ever experienced was in the Aston Martin Valkyrie LMH race car, where I could feel the blood pooling in my extremities during braking. The Czinger VMax now holds the number two spot on that list, and Jacobs hadn’t even pushed the car to its absolute limit. The rear wing, absent on the VMax, contributes significantly to the regular 21C’s downforce, but even in this wingless configuration, the grip was astronomical.
It was easy to understand how the standard Czinger 21C achieved the “California Gold Rush.” The car set five production car track records in five days—at Thunder Hill, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club—all while driving between the circuits. The company later returned to Laguna Seca not only to beat its own record but to reclaim the throne from the Koenigsegg Jesko Sadair’s Spear. The lap time, a ridiculous 1:22.30, is faster than the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at the circuit (1:22.56).
The Weight Advantage
Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds. This is remarkable for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid. For context, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano, the highest-performance version of a three-motor twin-turbo V-8 hybrid producing 986 horsepower, weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor V-8 (producing less power, but the comparison stands), weighs a staggering 4,185 pounds.
The SF90 and Temerario are the two quickest gasoline-powered cars MotorTrend has ever tested (the Ferrari for 0-60 mph and the Lambo for the quarter-mile). If Czinger’s weight claims hold true, they’ve managed to beat two Italian legends with their first production car. This is particularly noteworthy considering that Los Angeles isn’t exactly a traditional supercar manufacturing hub like Modena.
On the Road: The Daily Grind
The route chosen for the Velocity Tour consisted mostly of true back roads—tight, winding, and poorly maintained asphalt. This isn’t the kind of road usually associated with hypercar tours. There was a lot of convoy driving, navigation, and camera car tailgating. At the time, I was perhaps disappointed, but in retrospect, it gave me a realistic sense of what owning this car would be like.
To my surprise, the VMax behaved much like any other hypercar. You have to take everything out of your pockets—no cupholders, and the seats are tight. You also have to ignore the dozens of people on the road, especially males aged 16–24, staring, following, waving, and revving their engines as if you’ve just landed in a UFO.
