For years, the hypercar landscape has been dominated by a familiar cast of Italian and German giants, their names synonymous with luxury, performance, and exclusivity. But a new contender has emerged from the heart of Southern California, one that defies convention, redefines what’s possible, and pushes the boundaries of engineering into the realm of science fiction. This is the Czinger 21C VMax, a hybrid hypercar that represents not just the future of automotive design, but a complete reimagining of what a high-performance vehicle can be. The Birth of a Legend: Divergent Technologies Before diving into the exhilarating ride of the 21C VMax, it’s essential to understand the company behind it. Czinger Vehicles is a division of Divergent Technologies, a pioneering company that has been disrupting the automotive industry since its inception. Divergent isn’t just another car manufacturer; it’s a technology company that uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence, advanced generative design, and massive 3D printing capabilities to create lighter, stronger, and more efficient mechanical components. The technology developed by Divergent is so advanced that it extends beyond the automotive world. The company supplies critical components to the defense industry, a testament to the strength and reliability of its 3D-printed parts. During my visit to Czinger’s state-of-the-art facility in Southern California, I had the privilege of witnessing this technology firsthand. Seeing the massive 3D printers in action, transforming powdered aluminum into intricate, bone-like structures, felt like stepping into the future. It’s a process that embodies the pinnacle of precision engineering, where every gram is accounted for, and every shape serves a purpose.
Lukas Czinger, the young and visionary CEO of both Divergent Technologies and Czinger Vehicles, explained that their approach is driven by a philosophy they call “Pareto optimality.” This concept refers to a point where any attempt to improve one aspect of the design will inevitably compromise another. In simpler terms, they strive to create components that are the perfect balance of strength and lightness, using artificial intelligence to iterate hundreds of thousands of designs until the optimal solution is found. It’s a process akin to natural evolution, accelerated and perfected by technology. While Divergent’s automotive expertise is known to few, it extends to some of the world’s most prestigious car manufacturers. Nine automotive OEMs currently use Divergent’s 3D-printed parts in their vehicles. While some, like Aston Martin (DBR22 Roadster), Bugatti (Tourbillon), and McLaren (W1), openly admit to their collaboration, others, like Ferrari with its F80, remain tight-lipped, leaving the industry to speculate. This quiet influence speaks volumes about the quality and innovation that Divergent brings to the automotive table. The Czinger 21C Lineup: Two Sides of the Same Coin Czinger builds two distinct versions of what is essentially the same groundbreaking platform. The first is the 21C, a high-downforce, track-focused machine named after the 21st century. This is the version that has set numerous production car track records, pushing the limits of what’s possible on the circuit. The second, and the focus of this review, is the 21C VMax, a wingless, long-tailed version designed for road use. For the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile road rally through California’s picturesque wine country, I had the opportunity to pilot the silver 21C VMax. The name “VMax” suggests speed, and in the world of automotive engineering, it represents the maximum velocity a vehicle can achieve. But this isn’t just about raw speed; it’s about a driving experience that is unlike anything else on the road. Inside the Canopy: A Jet Fighter for the Street The cabin of the Czinger 21C VMax is best described as a cockpit rather than a typical car interior. True to the company’s philosophy of efficiency and performance, the interior is minimalist, functional, and unapologetically driver-focused. Czinger refers to the experience as being inside a jet fighter, and I can confirm that this description is spot-on. The visibility is incredible, with glass extending nearly all the way around the occupants. The process of getting into and out of the 21C VMax is, admittedly, a bit unconventional. You sit with your legs facing outwards on the massive sill, pull your knees up, and essentially spin on your butt as you tuck your feet into the narrow footwell. It’s a bit like performing a gymnastics move, but once you’re settled inside, the unique layout creates a sense of connection to the road that is simply exhilarating. One of the reasons for the large sills is the integration of batteries for the hybrid powertrain. The 21C VMax is a hybrid hypercar, and each sill houses 2.2 kWh of battery power, totaling 4.4 kWh. While it’s not a plug-in hybrid, a motor powered by the mid-mounted V-8 engine keeps the battery charged, providing a seamless power delivery. The Heartbeat of the VMax: A Twin-Turbo V-8
At the heart of the Czinger 21C VMax lies a remarkable powerplant developed by Czinger themselves. It’s a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that delivers a staggering 750 horsepower on California’s 91-octane premium unleaded. However, when filled with 100-octane race fuel, the power output increases to a mind-blowing 850 horsepower. The engine is also capable of running on ethanol, which Czinger claims will unlock even more power, though the specific figures have yet to be released. The combustion engine powers the rear wheels through an Xtrac single-clutch automated semi-sequential gearbox. This transmission is similar to the one found in the Pagani Utopia, but Czinger has taken it a step further. Not only is the gearbox casing 3D-printed using Divergent’s additive manufacturing technology, but the car also features small 48-volt electric motors that facilitate smoother and quicker shifts at lower speeds. This innovative approach eliminates the jerky, surging feeling that plagues most automated single-clutch transmissions, making low-speed maneuvers like pulling into gas stations and parking lots feel almost normal. Track Dominance: The Birth of the Legend Czinger built the 21C to dominate the track, and they succeeded in spectacular fashion. The original 21C set five production car track records in five days at tracks across California, including Thunder Hill, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club. The car then returned to Laguna Seca to not only beat its own record but to reclaim the throne from the Koenigsegg Jesko Sadair’s Spear. The record lap time of 1 minute, 22.30 seconds is faster than the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at Laguna, a testament to the car’s extraordinary performance. While non-Czinger employees are not permitted to drive the VMax on racetracks, I was fortunate enough to experience its raw power from the passenger seat. Riding shotgun in the VMax, even at a fraction of its potential, was an intense experience. The car’s acceleration is brutal, with the power being delivered instantly and relentlessly. Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds, which is incredibly light for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid vehicle. For context, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Asseto Fiorano, the highest-performance version of a three-motor twin-turbo V-8 PHEV, weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor twin-turbo V-8 that produces less power, weighs 4,185 pounds. If Czinger’s weight claim holds true, the 21C VMax would be lighter and more powerful than these two legendary Italian hypercars, a feat that is nothing short of remarkable. A Journey Through Wine Country: The Road Less Traveled The Velocity Tour took us through some of California’s most beautiful wine country, a region known for its winding roads and stunning scenery. However, the route chosen for the rally consisted mostly of tight, winding, and sometimes poorly maintained pavement, which isn’t exactly the kind of asphalt hypercar dream trips are made of. Plus, there was a lot of following the pack, navigating to lunch and coffee stops, and keeping up with the camera car. At the time, I felt a bit disappointed that we weren’t on a dedicated track or an open highway where I could fully unleash the VMax’s potential. However, in retrospect, I realized that the experience of driving the VMax on these roads gave me a sense of what most owners will experience while living with this incredible machine. To my surprise, the VMax was mostly like driving any other hyper-exotic. You have to be mindful of the tight seats, drink your water before you get in as there are no cupholders, and brace yourself for the attention of other drivers, especially young males who will undoubtedly be looking at you, following you, waving at you, and revving at you. However, the ride quality is surprisingly comfortable, and the air conditioning works well.
The only complaint I have about the VMax’s road-going experience is the lack of sound deadening.
