The Madness of the Czinger 21C VMax: Driving Pure Futuristic Technology
For years, the automotive world has watched with bated breath as Czinger Motors, a Southern California-based startup, has quietly pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in hypercar engineering. The Czinger 21C VMax isn’t just another high-priced toy for the ultra-wealthy; it’s a visceral, technologically dense statement about the future of automotive design. As someone who has spent over a decade navigating the complex landscape of supercar testing and market analysis, I approached this experience with a mix of exhilaration and trepidation. The idea of a 1,250-horsepower, 3D-printed hypercar with center-steer seating is, frankly, absurd in the best possible way.
My assignment was deceptively simple: experience the Czinger 21C VMax on a three-day road rally through California wine country. While the track performance of the 21C has been a subject of legend—setting five production car track records in five days—I was eager to understand what this alien machine feels like when subjected to the mundane realities of public roads. What happens when you blend extreme aerodynamic optimization with luxury touring? Does the technology support the ambition, or does the audacity of the design crumble under the weight of its own complexity? After spending hundreds of miles behind the yoke-style steering wheel, I emerged in a state of daze, utterly convinced that we are currently witnessing something revolutionary—and perhaps dangerously close to the edge of human control.
Factory Fresh: A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
To truly understand the Czinger 21C, you must first understand Divergent Technologies, the parent company. My visit to their Long Beach facility was unlike any factory tour I have ever experienced. To enter the premises, I was required to show my U.S. passport—a detail that immediately signals that this is no ordinary manufacturer. Divergent supplies parts not only to its namesake hypercar brand but also to the Department of Defense. One glance inside their production floor revealed what looked like the future: massive 3D printers firing lasers at powdered aluminum, fusing it into complex, organic shapes that resemble bird bones. It’s raw, industrial, and staggeringly beautiful.
Lukas Czinger, the young CEO of both Divergent and Czinger Motors, explained their core philosophy: the pursuit of “Pareto optimal” design. This is the engineering endpoint where any alteration—adding or subtracting even a single gram—results in a net negative outcome. Consider a simple suspension component. An engineer defines the target—mounting the remote reservoir for the rear damper—and must contain it within a specific space while withstanding immense forces. Instead of relying on traditional engineering intuition, Divergent’s software generates thousands of iterations, rapidly evolving designs until it identifies the structurally perfect balance of mass and strength. It feels less like engineering and more like accelerating evolution.
This advanced technology isn’t confined to boutique hypercars. Divergent supplies 3D-printed components to nine major automotive OEMs. While Aston Martin, Bugatti, and McLaren are public collaborators, industry whispers suggest that Ferrari, in particular, relies heavily on this technology. The Aston Martin DBR22 Roadster, the recent Bugatti Tourbillon, and the McLaren W1 all benefit from this additive manufacturing process. However, none of these production cars scream “alien” as loudly as the Czinger 21C. This level of in-house manufacturing capability, combined with a secretive defense-related division, gives the company a unique and formidable position in the market.
Under the Carbon Fiber: The VMax Philosophy
Czinger builds two versions of what is fundamentally the same machine: the high-downforce track weapon known as the 21C (named for the 21st century), and the wingless, long-tail grand tourer, the 21C VMax. While the “21C” designation appears on the car, it’s the VMax version that I spent my week testing. For the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile road rally through Northern California’s stunning wine country, I was handed the keys to a sleek, silver VMax.
The word “piloting” is used intentionally here. The cabin of the Czinger 21C feels more akin to a jet fighter canopy than a traditional car interior. Czinger themselves draw this comparison, and having experienced the inside of an Extra 330LT stunt plane, I understand why. The visibility is spectacular, with glass extending less than a foot from both sides of your head. However, the process of entering and exiting the vehicle is frankly ridiculous. You must sit with your legs facing outward on the massive carbon-fiber sill, pull your knees up and spin your torso until you’re facing the cockpit, then contort your feet into the cramped footwell before lowering your head under the roofline. It requires a degree of physical flexibility that most occupants won’t possess.
One reason the sills are so oversized is that they house the batteries. The 21C VMax is a hybrid hypercar, with each sill containing 2.2 kWh of battery power, for a total of 4.4 kWh. This isn’t a plug-in hybrid; instead, a powerful mid-mounted V8 engine constantly charges the pack. The front axle features two independent electric motors that provide a total of 500 horsepower. The combustion engine is a bespoke 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engineered by Czinger. On California’s 91-octane premium fuel, it produces 750 hp. Switching to 100-octane race fuel boosts output to 850 hp. The company also hints that ethanol running could push output even further, although those figures remain unreleased.
The V8 sends its power to the rear wheels through an Xtrac single-clutch automated semi-sequential gearbox. This is essentially the same transmission used in the Pagani Utopia, but Czinger has gone a step further. They not only 3D-print the transmission casing but also incorporate small 48-volt electric motors to execute shifts at low speeds. This clever innovation eliminates the jolting, lurching feel that plagues almost all other automated single-clutch transmissions in urban environments. The twin-barrel actuators work flawlessly, making low-speed maneuvers feel remarkably refined. Navigating gas stations, restaurants, and hotel parking lots felt almost normal—a significant achievement for such an extreme machine.
Track Time: The Unrelenting Grip
Czinger adheres to the practice common among high-end hypercar manufacturers: a professional driver remains in the passenger seat to ensure safety. For the duration of the first day, I rode shotgun with Evan Jacobs, an accomplished racer. Thankfully, by the evening, Jacobs assured the Czinger team that I was a capable driver, and I was permitted to fly solo for the rest of the rally.
We made a stop at Laguna Seca for some parade laps, but Czinger restricts drivers outside their organization from taking the VMax onto the track, even at the slow pace of the rally. So, I climbed into the bizarre rear seat. If you have large calves or wide feet, the rear-seat experience is not comfortable. My XXL calves felt wedged between the carbon-fiber tub and the seat, and my feet didn’t fit well. However, the visibility through the side glass is incredible. It’s a novel sensation, reminiscent of a stunt plane, even after thousands of track laps.
When Jacobs and I persuaded the Skip Barber Racing School staff to allow him to take the VMax for a “6/10ths” hot lap, the experience was breathtaking. The most intense hot lap I’ve ever endured was riding shotgun in an Aston Martin Valkyrie LMH race car, where I could feel my blood pooling in my extremities under heavy braking. The Czinger VMax now sits second on that personal ranking, and remember, Jacobs wasn’t even going full tilt. Even below race pace and without the massive downforce wing, it was easy to understand how the regular 21C set five production car track records at Thunder Hill, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club in five days, driving between each track.
Later, Czinger returned to Laguna Seca to not only beat its own record but reclaim the overall record from the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut’s “Revolt” project. The lap time? A mind-boggling 1 minute, 22.30 seconds. That pace is faster than the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at Laguna (1:22.56). It’s a testament to the VMax’s pure mechanical capability and extreme aerodynamic efficiency.
Czinger claims a curb weight of approximately 3,600 pounds, which is staggeringly light for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid. For context, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Asseto Fiorano—the most potent version of a three-motor twin-turbo V8 PHEV at 986 hp—weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor V8 (which makes less power, but provides context) pushes past the two-ton mark, coming in at a chunky 4,185 pounds.
