The name itself, inspired by Norse mythology, pays homage to Valhalla, the afterlife realm of heroic warriors, and marks a departure from Aston Martin’s traditional naming conventions.
However, the road to production was not without its challenges. The automotive landscape underwent significant changes during this period, and Aston Martin experienced its own internal shifts. The original powertrain plans, which included an in-house-designed turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, evolved to incorporate a hybrid system derived from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. This strategic pivot allowed Aston Martin to harness the proven performance of AMG’s twin-turbo V-8, enhancing it with larger turbos, a new inlet manifold, stronger pistons, and different camshafts to boost output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. The Valhalla remains the exclusive home of this powerful engine, making it a truly unique offering in the market.
Performance Beyond Expectations
In August 2022, I had the chance to sit in a mockup of the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The experience was exhilarating, particularly the reclined and elevated-leg seating position inspired by Formula 1. Even at that early stage, the projected specs for the V-8-based powertrain were impressive, with expectations of 1,012 hp and an undisclosed torque figure. While Aston Martin emphasized that these figures were still in development, they were more than enough to pique my interest and leave me eager to experience the production version firsthand.
As it turns out, the final production hardware exceeds even those ambitious expectations. The flat-plane-crank, dry-sump, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine delivers a staggering 817 hp. This is combined with a total of 248 hp provided by two Aston-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet motors on the front axle and a third mounted to the new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Driving Experience: Beyond the Numbers

The suspension, a Valhalla-specific Bilstein DTX active damper system, combined with a five-link rear layout, provides a surprisingly comfortable ride for a car of this caliber.
The square-ish steering wheel feels nice to use, and the molded-in crease/edge on the grip provides a more positive grip than a rounded surface. The steering feel is intuitive, with a lovely weight that’s neither too light nor heavy across various drive modes. When you push the Valhalla hard, the front-axle torque vectoring and rear e-differential work together to keep the chassis rotating into and pulling out of corners with minimal fuss, enticing the driver to push harder and harder while maintaining their confidence in the car.
The one downside for some might be the lack of ultra-high revs from the V-8, which redlines at 7,000 rpm. However, the combination of electric motors and turbos creates a multifaceted symphony of induction, exhaust, and electric whine that is thrilling without being over the top.
On the Track: Mastering the Performance
The Valhalla truly shines on the track. In Race mode, the hybrid system operates differently than in Sport+, providing a stable and consistent power delivery that allows the driver to focus on maximizing performance. The active aero system and braking system play huge roles in this. The braking system gives you a satisfyingly firm brake pedal that never softens, thanks to a large amount of the actual braking being accomplished through battery regen. As with every brake-by-wire system, there’s a lack of granular feel compared to conventional hydraulic brakes, but the Valhalla’s system is tuned so well that it feels intuitive and predictable.
The active aero and braking systems provide stable, consistent downforce without discombobulated shifting of the aerodynamic center of pressure. The approximately 3,850-pound Valhalla makes a big-time 935 pounds of combined front/rear downforce at 124 mph and a maximum of 1,345 pounds at 149 mph. This maximum figure remains the same all the way to the car’s top speed of 217 mph.
