The Aston Martin Valhalla: A Rocket Ship That Rewrites the Rules of Performance
“So, how was it?!”
It’s the question everyone asks after a drive in Aston Martin’s million-dollar, 1,064-horsepower Valhalla. But in the 2020s, reviewing a supercar is a surreal experience. It feels less like a test drive and more like a glimpse into the future of performance.
When friends asked about the Valhalla, I found myself hesitating before answering. “Exactly how you’d expect it to be,” I’d say. But that only makes sense if you’ve experienced the state of the supercar art for yourself.
The Years in the Making
Seven years feels like a lifetime ago. The 2019 Geneva Motor Show debut of the AM-RB 003 was supposed to mark Aston Martin’s entry into the hybrid hypercar wars. The name, inspired by Norse mythology, fit the brand’s V-naming tradition and its then-sponsorship of the Red Bull Racing F1 team.
But a lot has changed. Aston and Red Bull ended their partnership after the 2020 season when Lawrence Stroll rebranded his F1 team to Aston Martin. More importantly, the automotive landscape was evolving rapidly, and Aston Martin was undergoing a massive overhaul.
The Hybrid Powerhouse
Initially, Aston planned an in-house 3.0-liter V-6 hybrid, but that changed. The Valhalla now uses a hybrid powertrain based on the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series twin-turbo V-8. Aston upgraded it with bigger turbos, a new inlet manifold, stronger pistons, and different camshafts, boosting the output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. It’s the only production car that features this engine.
When I sat in a prototype at Pebble Beach in August 2022, the projected specs had jumped to 1,012 hp. That was impressive, but the production version exceeds those expectations.
The flat-plane-crank, dry-sump, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 makes 817 hp. Combined with 248 hp from three Aston-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet motors, the Valhalla delivers a total of 1,064 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque. An Aston-first eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox manages the power, and it’s as smooth as silk.
Beyond the Benchmark
But the Valhalla is more than just a powerhouse. It’s a plug-in hybrid, meaning you can drive it in EV-only mode for up to 8.7 miles. That’s a game-changer for a car like this.
While some may argue whether it’s a “supercar” or a “hypercar,” it doesn’t matter. The Valkyrie exists, so Aston had to choose “supercar” to avoid “first ever” marketing conflicts. But the Valkyrie is a $3+ million car with only 285 units. The Valhalla, at a mere $1.1 million and 999 units, seems almost pedestrian in comparison.
That just shows how much the world has changed. A million-dollar car is no longer rare. In the time it took Aston to develop the Valhalla, we’ve seen the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Ferrari F80, Czinger 21C VMax, and even a hybrid Corvette ZR1X with 1,250 hp.
Driving the Valhalla
With so many extreme cars on the market, it’s tempting to compare them. But comparison is the thief of joy. The Valhalla should be judged on its own merits.
The overall experience is what matters. You want a car that’s thrilling on the road but handles like a dream on the track. The Valhalla delivers both.
On the Road
You might expect a car that looks like a Le Mans Hypercar to be a compromise on the road. But you’d be wrong. The Valhalla is comfortable, refined, and surprisingly easy to drive. The only downside is the lack of luggage space. The trunk is small because of the three radiators, electric motors, and pushrod suspension.
The seating position is inspired by F1 cars—low and reclined. You can’t adjust the seat angle, so you have to adapt to the position. And since the seats are bolted to the floor, there’s no motor to slide them forward and back. Instead, you pull a leather strap between your legs to adjust. It sounds awkward, but it’s not that bad once you get used to it.
The Bilstein DTX active damper system makes the ride comfortable, even on rough roads. The steering feel is intuitive, maintaining a perfect weight that’s neither too light nor too heavy.
When I found a long, open stretch of country road, I launched the Valhalla. The speed is no more shocking than it is in other similar cars, but the flat torque curve means 90 percent of the peak 811 lb-ft is available from 2,500 rpm all the way to 6,700 rpm. It never lets up.
The one minor letdown is the redline—set at 7,000 rpm, it’s not as high as some supercars. And the sound is a mix of electric motors, turbos, induction, and exhaust. It’s loud but not overwhelming. Some might prefer the raw roar of a traditional V-8, but this symphony of modern tech is undeniably impressive.
The Valhalla on Track
The real magic happens on the track. The Circuito de Navarra is a medium-speed road course with a great mix of corners, braking zones, and elevation changes.
This is where the Valhalla’s trick torque vectoring, aerodynamics, and monster braking system shine. The car handles like a dream, thanks to its stable platform that never feels like it’s about to betray you.
While some drivers might want a more dramatic, sideways experience, the Valhalla is all about precision and confidence. The front-axle torque vectoring and rear e-differential work in harmony to rotate the chassis into and out of corners with minimal fuss. It entices you to push harder, knowing the car will reward you with stability and control.
The active aero and braking system play a huge role in this. The brakes provide a firm, consistent pedal thanks to regenerative braking. But like many brake-by-wire systems, there’s a lack of granular feel compared to traditional hydraulics. Still, the braking performance remains consistent, even at high speeds.
Aerodynamically, the underbody front wing and deployable rear wing adjust based on speed and dynamic conditions. The underbody wing resembles an F1 front wing, and yes, Aston Martin Performance Technologies worked with the Valhalla’s engineers here. The rear wing also provides an air-brake function when you stomp on the pedal.
A Farewell to Fear
So, how was it?
There’s so much going on beneath the surface of modern cars like this that it’s impossible to cover everything in one article. Even the chief engineer admitted that writing a full book on the subject would be the only way to do it justice.
Even when you know all this, and even when you’ve driven other supercars, you still need to experience the latest one to confirm it hits the mark. The Valhalla does more than hit the mark—it shatters it.
And to answer the question, “Exactly how you expect it to be,” doesn’t do the Valhalla justice. The honest answer is: “Not long ago, you wouldn’t have ever believed it possible.”
