2026 Aston Martin Valhalla Review: A Million-Dollar Masterpiece of Modern Engineering “So, how was it?!” It’s the question everyone asks after you’ve driven something like the 2026 Aston Martin Valhalla—a hypercar that costs nearly $1.1 million and boasts 1,064 horsepower. For decades, car magazines have reviewed these machines, but honestly, it’s becoming surreal. When four different friends asked me that question yesterday, I paused. I realized that answering it directly only makes sense if you’ve actually experienced what a modern hypercar feels like in the 2020s. A Long Time Coming Seven years feels like a lifetime ago. The isolated pandemic years twisted time, but that’s how long it’s been since Aston Martin first showed the AM-RB 003 at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The original name, which has since changed to Valhalla (the glorious afterlife for Viking warriors), reflected Aston’s sponsorship ties to the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team. A lot has changed since then. Aston and Red Bull split after the 2020 F1 season when Lawrence Stroll bought Racing Point and rebranded it as Aston Martin F1. But more importantly, the automotive world was evolving rapidly, and Aston was changing with it. Internal turnover was chaotic, and the Valhalla’s hybrid powertrain—once planned as an in-house 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6—was replaced by a hybridized powertrain derived from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Aston upgraded the turbos, intake manifold, pistons, and camshafts to boost output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. This engine is exclusive to the Valhalla.
When I sat in a mockup at Pebble Beach in August 2022, the projected specs had jumped from 937 hp and 738 lb-ft to 1,012 hp. Aston insisted nothing was final, but I said, “Please, let me drive it when it’s ready.” Worth the Wait… Based on Aston’s development schedule back then, I didn’t expect another three and a half years to pass before getting that chance. But the production car’s hardware exceeds those earlier expectations. The flat-plane-crank, dry-sump 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 makes 817 hp. Combined with 248 hp from three Aston-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet electric motors (one in the gearbox, two on the front axle), the Valhalla produces a peak output of 1,064 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system includes a 560-cell battery pack that Aston engineers immersed in dielectric oil to keep it cool. As chief engineer Andrew Kay explained, “We’re able to push energy into the battery and cycle it out very quickly. This is very good for track use, in particular.” Unlike the original concept and its Valkyrie big brother, the production Valhalla is a plug-in hybrid, capable of up to 8.7 miles in EV-only mode with an 80 mph top speed. …But Something Else Happened Along the Way Some hypercar enthusiasts might dispute the term “supercar,” but Aston calls the Valhalla its first-ever mid-engine supercar. It seems like a hypercar, doesn’t it? Yes, except for the Valkyrie. Aston’s marketing team is apparently cornered into using “super” to avoid claiming “first-ever” achievements. But the Valkyrie is barely a road car; its $3+ million price tag and 285-unit run make the Valhalla’s million-and-change MSRP and 999-unit inventory seem relatively pedestrian. That’s absurd in the real world, of course, but it speaks to the changing landscape of high-performance automobiles in terms of price and capability. Millennials, Zoomers, and Gen Alpha are probably accustomed to seeing million-dollar cars flood their social media feeds monthly. Each one spits out unimaginable power and torque figures, acceleration times, and tech specs that fill pages. For older generations, however, the shockwave of something like the 1993–94 McLaren F1—627 hp and about $800,000—is still vivid. Even more so the Bugatti Veyron just 20 years ago, widely considered the first million-dollar, 1,000-hp hypercar. Nowadays? Since I sat in the Valhalla prototype at Pebble Beach, we’ve driven cars with half the power but twice the aero and racing tech, requiring pro-racer skills to max out on the track. Their road usability is debatable. Stepping up in price, construction, and tech, MotorTrend has recently sampled the Ferrari F80, 849 Testarossa, Czinger 21C VMax, and the “run of the mill but dizzyingly fast” Porsche 911 Turbo S. There’s even a hybrid Corvette ZR1X with 1,250 hp that no one saw coming when the Valhalla was first conceived by Aston Martin and Adrian Newey.
Just Drive It With all this in mind, “comparison is the thief of joy” has never been more relevant in supercar terms. It’s also fitting because the odds of testing these cars against each other are zero, thanks to Ferrari’s unwillingness to supply publications like ours with cars for head-to-head showdowns. (Shame on you, Ferrari.) No matter, because with dynamic limits this high, it’s more satisfying to drive something like the Valhalla on its own merits and see what experience it provides. Make no mistake; the overall experience matters in cars like this. It’s no longer good enough to be fun on the road but understeer like crap on the track. Or be mesmerizing on track but jarring on the road. Aston Martin’s Valhalla, based on Angus MacKenzie’s earlier test, is already a winner on all fronts, aside from some transmission tuning. On the Road Unlike Angus, who drove only at Silverstone’s Stowe circuit, Aston gave us a 50-minute road loop. You might expect a Le Mans-style appearance and low stance to be compromised for daily driving, but that’s not the case. Aside from the utter lack of luggage space—small cubbies in the door cards, no frunk because space is needed for three high-temp radiators, electric motors, and a racing-style pushrod suspension—it’s surprisingly usable. The F1-style seating position makes the bodywork lower, maintaining a clear sightline. There’s no backrest angle adjustment; you must adapt to the seating position. The seats are bolted so low that there’s no motor to slide yourself forward and back. Instead, you pull a leather strap between your legs to adjust position. You get used to the driving position quickly; it’s not extreme. Within two miles, you realize the Valhalla-specific Bilstein DTX active dampers and suspension setup (five-link rear) make for a comfortable megacar. The Spanish road route wasn’t rough, but it wasn’t smooth either, and there wasn’t a huge gap between the suspension’s Sport and Sport+ settings—a usable trait seen in other new Astons like the Vantage. Race mode offers a harsher ride you’d get tired of on mundane drives, but you can handle it, especially on a well-maintained, fast, sweeping road. The square steering wheel feels good. The molded crease on the backside where your fingers naturally rest—designed for a better grip than a rounded surface—might not be the most comfortable for everyone. But the steering feel is intuitive, maintaining a nice weight that’s neither too light nor heavy across drive modes. When I found a long, open country road with no traffic, I stopped, mashed the brake and throttle, and launch-controlled the Valhalla. Aside from a slight rear wiggle as the tires hooked up, it’s simply goooooo. Aston claims 0–62 mph in 2.5 seconds, so figure on 0–60 in 2.4 or 2.3 seconds. It’s no more or less shocking than other similar cars, but an impressively flat torque curve means 90% of the peak 811 lb-ft is available from 2,500 rpm all the way to the 6,700 rpm power peak. It just never lets up. If there’s a disappointment for supercar/hypercar enthusiasts, it’s the lack of ultra-high revs; the redline is set to 7,000 rpm. The sound is also a mixed bag of electric motors, turbos, induction, and exhaust. It’s loud enough when you stomp on it, but no one will ever list this on a “best-sounding engines” list. There’s just a lot going on, and it doesn’t always sound better for it. Valhalla on the Track There’s even more going on at the track, this time Spain’s Circuito de Navarra, a 2.7-mile medium-speed road course with a good mix of corners, braking zones, and elevation changes. This environment reveals the power of the Valhalla’s trick torque vectoring, aerodynamics, and monster braking system.
