For automotive enthusiasts and collectors, the conversation around this prestigious category of events often revolves around which gathering holds the title of the “best.” While the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance remains the crown jewel of the Pebble Beach Concours, commanding unparalleled respect in the classic car world, the automotive landscape has evolved. The traditional hierarchy is being challenged, particularly by events catering to the modern enthusiast’s obsession with supercars and hypercars.
Monterey Car Week, a week-long extravagance featuring a series of high-profile events that culminates in the Pebble Beach Concours, has long been the benchmark for luxury automotive gatherings. This annual spectacle has historically dominated the automotive consciousness, drawing wealthy and well-dressed individuals from around the globe to witness rare and significant vehicles. However, as the industry has shifted, the automotive calendar has adapted to the demands of collectors. The decline of the Geneva International Motor Show has created a void that has been increasingly filled by events like The Quail, which has become a critical platform for new car debuts. The Rise of The Quail and The Emergence of a New Contender For many years, The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering has served as an essential prelude to the Sunday proceedings at Pebble Beach. It has long surpassed its status as a mere appetizer, particularly for a growing segment of the automotive enthusiast community. This segment is primarily interested in late-model and brand-new supercars, often showing less interest in vintage automobiles. The transition away from traditional motor shows has led many collectors to prioritize events that showcase the latest advancements in performance and design. The Quail has successfully capitalized on this shift, becoming a major supercar event that serves as a primary venue for global debuts. Several high-profile vehicle launches underscore The Quail’s prominence. The Lamborghini Aventador made its official debut at Geneva in 2011, and the limited-edition Veneno followed in 2013. The Aventador’s successor, the Revuelto, was introduced online, but the Temerario (the Huracán’s replacement) made its first public appearance at The Quail in 2024. Similarly, the seven-figure Fenomeno was unveiled at the 2025 Quail. Bugatti launched the Chiron in Geneva in 2016, but the Divo (2018) and Mistral (2022) were both first revealed at The Quail. These examples illustrate The Quail’s emergence as the premier venue for unveiling cutting-edge luxury cars. Until late 2025, I believed The Quail’s position at the zenith of the automotive world was secure. However, after attending the 2025 Las Vegas Concours (officially known as Concours at Wynn Las Vegas), I am no longer convinced. To provide context, I also attended the 2024 event and, while enjoyable, it felt primarily regional. The lineup included many familiar top-tier cars, and if not for a project I was involved with, I would likely not have attended. However, I am profoundly grateful that I did. The 2025 Las Vegas Concours: A Spectacle of Unprecedented Proportions The Wynn Las Vegas presented an astonishing 48 Bugatti Veyrons on the lawn. To grasp the scale of this gathering, consider that out of the 450 Veyrons produced globally and the 100 sold in North America, 48 were on display. The count actually reached 49, as Bugatti also showcased a stunning white Vitesse Super Sport to commemorate the Veyron’s 20th anniversary. They also displayed a Bolide, Centodieci, Chiron Super Sport, Divo, Mistral, and a model of the upcoming 18-cylinder hybrid Tourbillon. Accumulating more than 10% of all Bugatti Veyrons ever built in one place left me speechless. If Pagani is more your speed, the event offered more than 40 examples. While I didn’t get a precise count—I was too captivated by the Veyrons—there were several Zondas, including a Zonda Revolution (one of only five), dozens of Huayras, numerous Utopias, and—most notably for The Quail—the global debut of the Huayra Codalunga Speedster. Pagani plans to produce only 10 of these at a price of $7 million each, before taxes and tariffs. (The mint green prototype belonged to Apple’s Tim Cook.) Even if carbon fiber extroverts aren’t your preference, the fact that the 2025 Las Vegas Concours hosted the largest Pagani gathering in North America and that Horacio Pagani, honored onstage by emcee Justin Bell for his contributions to car design, chose this venue for a debut speaks volumes. More on that later. Back to the 40+ Paganis: that’s more cars than the factory produces in a year. The Lamborghini section was equally mind-blowing for enthusiasts of these vehicles. The 2025 Wynn Vegas Concours hosted the largest gathering of Lamborghinis ever, with an estimated 230 cars present out of the 600 total on display. This number alone is astonishing, representing nearly 40% of the event’s attendees. Among the 230, there was a Veneno Coupe (one of only three sold to the public, with the factory retaining a fourth), a Sesto Elemento (one of 10), a Centenario Coupe (one of 20) and convertible (also one of 20), and a Reventón (one of 21). The last time I saw all these limited-production models together was at the factory’s museum—a flabbergasting display of precious Italian performance cars.
To maintain some semblance of brevity, I am omitting many other notable inclusions such as the Koenigseggs, the Gumpert Apollo, the Czingers, the Nilu, the McLaren Project Endurance race car debut, all the vehicles that were formally judged (including a former and insane Pebble Beach Concours-winning 1929 Mercedes-Benz 680 S Barker Tourer 26/120/180 that also won prewar best of show here), the HWA EVO, a Mercedes-AMG One, two Oldsmobile Aerotechs, and a McLaren F1. This alone illustrates what a spectacular car show this was. The Future of Automotive Gatherings: Competition and Opportunity Two recurring conversations emerged among attendees at the Wynn Vegas Concours. The first question was predictable: “How on earth are they going to top this next year?” The answer is unknown, but I wish the Wynn the best of luck. The second, and arguably more intriguing, question from the OEM carmakers was: “Should we even bother attending The Quail next year?” This is a valid question. Perhaps The Quail should prepare for a challenge from its younger sibling. Here are a few facts about The Quail that many may not realize: A single ticket cost $1,300 last year for returning “legacy ticket holders.” First-time attendees paid $1,600. While expensive, the cost for OEMs to place a car on a stand is approximately $400,000 for six hours. The Vegas Concours charges about 1/20th of that. Attendance tickets cost only $100. That’s roughly $2 per Veyron on display. I spoke to three different automotive manufacturers who openly questioned the need to ever attend The Quail again, musing whether Las Vegas and Moda Miami were sufficient. Furthermore, attendees will avoid the heart-attack-inducing prices of five-star hotels found in other areas (one friend stayed at a motel near Pebble costing $1,100 per night). You also won’t face soul-crushing traffic navigating from event to event. Making dinner reservations is simple, as Las Vegas is built for large gatherings. What I have described might seem improbable, but only a few years ago, Geneva was the epicenter of the supercar world. I cannot predict the future, but I can assure you that the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas is now on my must-attend list. You should add it to yours as well. It has redefined what an automotive show can be, setting a new standard for supercar gatherings.
