Porsche perfection: Tracking the 911’s Evolution Through Five Decades of Driving Thrills
After 40 years behind the wheel of the legendary Porsche 911, it’s impossible not to reflect on the journey. The journey of a car that has defined the sports car segment for more than half a century. In 1984, I first got my hands on a Porsche 911 — a white 3.0-liter Carrera with black Fuchs alloys. It was a raw, elemental machine. No rear wing, no power steering, a five-speed manual gearbox. It was fast, no doubt, but it was also temperamental.
What struck me most was its contrast with the Porsche 944 Turbo. Back then, in Australia, they cost about the same. The 944 Turbo was faster, smoother, and easier to drive. But the 911, despite its flaws, had a soul. It demanded your respect, required your commitment, and ultimately, won your heart. It was not a car for everyone; it was a car for those who appreciated imperfection and the unique character it offered.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of driving dozens of 911s. Each one a testament to Porsche’s relentless pursuit of perfection. From the early models to the cutting-edge machines of today, the 911 has evolved, always remaining relevant, always exciting, and always engaging. Even after 40 years, the 911 is still one of the very few new cars I would happily spend my own money on. Looking back, these are the five 911 models that have left the deepest impression on me.
The Original 911 Turbo (930): The Widowmaker
Veteran journalists of that era spoke of the original 911 Turbo, the 930, with an almost religious reverence. They warned of its vicious character, a car that demanded respect and precision at the limit. A car whose abrupt turbo boost was a knife-edge experience that required quick hands and nerves of steel. It was, they said, a “widowmaker.” It took me 35 years to finally get behind the wheel of one and experience the truth myself.
I had the chance to drive one of the first 30 production Turbos ever built, now a prized possession of Porsche’s classic fleet. Out on the open road, fully aware of its intimidating reputation, I took it very slowly at first. I played with the throttle, testing the boost threshold, feeling the turbocharger come alive as I monitored the tachometer. The engine was remarkably responsive, happy to hum along at 2,000 rpm in top gear, cruising at 45 mph. But once the engine hit 3,500 rpm, the acceleration was noticeable, as the turbocharger pushed 0.8 bar of boost into the induction system. Yet, the sledgehammer blow I expected wasn’t there.
I discovered the secret to smooth and rapid progress in the original 911 Turbo was keeping the 3.0-liter flat-six spinning at 4,000 rpm or higher. This kept the turbocharger energized. Yes, there was turbo lag — very noticeable by modern standards — but it was manageable. Even today, more than 50 years old, this 911 is impressively fast on the road. First gear reaches 50 mph, second to 90 mph, and third to almost 130 mph. This means it could handle most winding roads using only second and third gears. And while it produced a mere 256 hp, it weighed just 2,513 pounds, making it incredibly agile in and out of corners. Fifty years ago, its performance was simply otherworldly.
The 993 Generation: The Peak of Air-Cooling
For many Porsche purists, the 993 is the last of the true 911s. It’s the car you drive with your knuckles grazing the dash, the snarling metallic symphony of an air-cooled flat-six echoing from the rear. But back in 1994, when I first drove it, the 993 was the 911 of the future. It was the first model to challenge the laws of physics. The front end still demanded precision to hit the apex, and the rear still danced through rough turns, but the synchronization between them was much better. The 993 still behaved like a 911, but within a much safer margin.
The key to this transformation was a revolutionary rear suspension. It replaced the old semi-trailing arms with a new multilink setup. This allowed for a very slight initial toe-out on corner entry, which then progressed to toe-in as lateral loads increased, while reducing the camber change that had plagued 911s since 1963. This was combined with steering that was 16 percent quicker at 2.5 turns lock-to-lock, giving the front end a much more decisive feel. Plus, a new six-speed manual transmission made the most of the 3.6-liter flat-six, which revved harder to its 268 hp power peak at 6,100 rpm thanks to lighter internals, Bosch Motronic 2.0 engine management, and a new dual-exhaust system.
Compared to the 964 model it replaced, the 993 was a revelation. It wasn’t just the engineering upgrades, overseen by Ulrich Bez (who later led Aston Martin). The exterior redesign, led by design chief Harm Lagaay, fixed the visual issues he saw in the 964, which he felt was too tall at the front and too raked at the rear. The interior was cleaner too, with fewer buttons in random places. The 993 was faster, more forgiving, and, most importantly, even more desirable.
The 996 Generation: The Water-Cooled Savior
At the time, it was sacrilege. Porsche’s decision to put a water-cooled flat-six in the tail of the 996-series 911 was, for purists, the automotive equivalent of Bob Dylan ditching his acoustic six-string for an electric Fender Strat at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. But the 996, the first clean-sheet redesign of Porsche’s iconic sports car in 34 years, was a hero in my book. It was the 911 that saved Porsche.
Engineered and developed under the direction of Porsche R&D chief Horst Marchart, the 996 was a clever 911, partly because it shared 38 percent of its components with an all-new, less expensive mid-engine roadster known as the Boxster. The visionary Porsche boss Wendelin Weideking knew the Boxster was essential to give dealers something else to sell once the aging 928 and 968 models were phased out. “We essentially built two cars for the price of one and a half,” design chief Harm Lagaay said with a smile after the company unveiled the 996.
But while the media spotlight focused on its connection to the Boxster and the water-cooled engine, the 996’s real story ran much deeper. In 1994, it took Porsche 130 hours to build a 993-series 911; the 996 took only 60 hours. The modern 911 had arrived: roomier, equipped with all the features expected of a late 20th-century sports car, yet still recognizably a Porsche icon. Most importantly, it still drove like a 911. Only better. Yes, there was a new veneer of sophistication, but the 996 retained the delicious tactility and urgent response that had made the 911 a unique sports car. And along with the original Boxster, it saved Porsche from extinction.
The 991.2 Carrera: The Everyman’s Sports Car
Out of all the 911s I’ve driven, it was a base 991.2 Carrera that truly captured my heart. And judging by the feedback from my colleagues who drove it at the time, it captured theirs too. Most press fleets are usually packed with high-spec vehicles loaded with options, presumably because automotive PRs believe we are impressed by such things. So, Porsche Cars North America’s decision to include a base 911 Carrera among the roster of then-new 991.2 models for our 2017 MotorTrend Car of the Year testing seemed a bold move. In truth, though, it was inspired.
The 991.2 introduced a new 3.4-liter turbocharged engine, available with 370 hp in the base Carrera or 420 hp in the Carrera S. Even in 370-hp trim, it delivered a broad torque band and impressive efficiency. This Carrera proved that even on the base wheel and tire combination, the chassis was staggeringly communicative and adjustable. Visually, the 991.2 was a subtle refresh of the larger, skillfully reproportioned 991.1. It was a superbly executed interpretation of classic 911 themes, modern and beautiful. The interior featured a new infotainment interface that looked great and functioned well.
