For more than 40 years, I’ve had the privilege of putting Porsches through their paces, dissecting everything from the purist machines of the 1970s to the hyper-aerodynamic track monsters of today. While the Porsche 911 has evolved dramatically over the decades, one thing has remained constant: its ability to captivate drivers, both novices and veterans alike. It’s a car that demands respect, understanding, and a willingness to engage with the mechanical heartbeat of German engineering.
I vividly remember my first encounter with the 911 back in the late 1970s, driving a white 3.0-liter Carrera with black Fuchs alloys. It was raw, mechanical, and unapologetically imperfect—a stark contrast to the blisteringly fast 944 Turbo that I was also testing at the time. Yet, despite its flaws, the 911 tugged at something deeper within me. I was captivated by its analog feel, its intuitive handling, and the sheer joy of mastering a car that didn’t simply cater to the driver but invited them to participate in the driving experience.
Over the years, I’ve tested dozens of 911s, each one a testament to Porsche’s relentless pursuit of perfection. And while every iteration has impressed me in its own unique way, some have left a more indelible mark on my memory than others. These are the five Porsche 911s that, in my opinion, stand out as the most significant and unforgettable driving experiences of my career.
The Original Legend: 1975 Porsche 930 Turbo
Back in the days when I first drove the 3.0-liter Carrera, veteran road testers spoke of the original Porsche 911 Turbo in hushed tones. They described it as a car that demanded the utmost respect, a machine whose binary boost characteristics forced drivers to master the delicate tightrope between corner-entry understeer and corner-exit oversteer. They warned that the 911 Turbo did not forgive mistakes and that sloppiness in driving would be punished severely. The word “widowmaker” was thrown around with casual regularity. It took me 35 years to finally get behind the wheel of an original 911 Turbo to discover if the legends were true.
I was fortunate enough to drive one of the first 30 production Turbos ever built, a pristine example from Porsche’s renowned classic fleet. Aware of its fearsome reputation, I approached it cautiously, gradually exploring the throttle’s response and monitoring the tachometer to build a mental map of its powerband. To my surprise, the engine was remarkably tractable at low RPM, offering a smooth and linear power delivery. Once the turbocharger spooled up around 3,500 RPM, however, the acceleration was visceral, pushing me back into the seat with a force I hadn’t expected.
The trick to driving the original 911 Turbo smoothly and quickly is to keep the 3.0-liter flat-six spinning above 4,000 RPM to keep the turbocharger energized. While there’s noticeable turbo lag by modern standards, it’s manageable. Even today, this 911 is an impressively fast car on the road. First gear reaches 50 mph, second gear reaches 90 mph, and third gear reaches almost 130 mph, allowing you to devour winding two-lane roads using just second and third gears. And while it boasts a mere 256 hp, its curb weight of just 2,513 pounds allows it to attack corners with surprising agility. In the 1970s, this level of performance would have seemed otherworldly.
The Evolutionary Masterpiece: 1996 Porsche 911 993
For Porsche purists, the 993-generation 911 represents the last of the air-cooled line—the last of the “real” 911s. It’s the car that connects drivers to the mechanical soul of the original, where the snarling clatter of an air-cooled flat-six is a constant companion and the steering is pure analog feedback. However, back in 1994 when I first drove it, the 993 was the 911 of the future, one of the first to challenge the established laws of physics with its groundbreaking engineering.
Sure, the 993 still had that distinctive 911 front-end feel that required drivers to load the front suspension on corner entry to hit the apex. The rear end still danced through the rougher turns, but there was a newfound harmony between the front and rear. The 993 still performed all the 911 tricks, but within a much tighter margin of error. The key innovation was a new rear suspension system that replaced the semi-trailing arms of the past with a sophisticated multilink setup. This provided subtle initial toe-out on corner entry and progressive toe-in as lateral loads increased, while dramatically reducing the camber change that had been the Achilles’ heel of 911s since their inception in 1963.
This revolutionary suspension was combined with steering that felt significantly quicker at 2.5 turns lock-to-lock, giving the front end a more decisive and responsive feel. The car also featured a new six-speed manual transmission that perfectly complemented the 3.6-liter flat-six, which now delivered 268 hp at 6,100 RPM thanks to lighter internals, Bosch Motronic 2.0 engine management, and a new dual-exhaust system. Compared to the 964 model it replaced, the 993 was nothing short of a revelation.
Beyond the engineering enhancements led by Ulrich Bez (later the head of Aston Martin), the exterior redesign by Harm Lagaay corrected visual issues that plagued the 964, a car he felt was too tall at the front and too low at the rear. The interior was cleaner, too, with fewer buttons scattered in random locations. The 993 was a 911 that was faster, more forgiving, and infinitely more desirable than ever before.
The Revolution: 1999 Porsche 911 996
At the time of its release, the 996-generation 911’s decision to switch to a water-cooled flat-six engine was heresy to aficionados. To them, it was the automotive equivalent of Bob Dylan abandoning his acoustic guitar for a Fender Strat at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. However, the 996—Porsche’s first clean-sheet redesign of its iconic sports car in 34 years—was a hero car in my eyes. It was the 911 that saved Porsche from a precipice.
Engineered and developed under the leadership of Porsche R&D chief Horst Marchart, the 996 was a marvel of ingenuity. It shared 38 percent of its components with an all-new, less expensive mid-engine roadster that the world would come to know as the Boxster. Porsche’s iconoclastic boss, Wendelin Wiedeking, understood that the Boxster was essential to give Porsche’s dealerships a new product to sell when the aging 928 and 968 models were discontinued. “We built two cars for the price of one-and-a-half,” design chief Harm Lagaay famously said with a smile after Porsche unveiled the 996.
But while media attention focused on its kinship with the Boxster and the controversial water-cooled engine, the 996’s real significance ran much deeper. In 1994, it took Porsche 130 hours to build a 993-series 911; the 996 took just 60 hours to build. The modern 911 had arrived: roomier and equipped with all the features expected of a late 20th-century sports car, yet still unmistakably a 911. Most importantly, it still drove like a 911—only better. Yes, there was a new veneer of sophistication to its engineering, but the 996 retained the delicious tactility and urgent response that had made the 911 a sports car like no other. Alongside the original Boxster, it truly saved Porsche from extinction.
The Underestimated Gem: 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera 991.2
Of all the 911s I’ve driven, it was a base model 991.2 Carrera that truly stole my heart. Judging by the feedback I received from colleagues who drove it at the time, I wasn’t alone. Most press fleets tend to be loaded with high-spec vehicles adorned with every conceivable option, presumably because automotive PR firms believe we’re impressed by such things. So, Porsche Cars North America’s decision to include a base 911 Carrera among the selection of then-new 991.2 models available for our 2017 MotorTrend Car of the Year testing seemed a brave one. In truth, though, it was an inspired decision.
The 991.2 generation introduced a new 3.4-liter turbocharged engine, delivering 370 hp in the base Carrera or 420 hp in the Carrera S. Even in 370-hp trim, the engine offered a broad band of torque and impressive fuel efficiency. This Carrera also demonstrated that even on the base wheel and tire combination
