Czinger 21C VMax: When the Future Leaves You Speechless
The automotive world loves to talk about the future. We get breathless about electrification, autonomous driving, and advanced materials. But every now and then, a car comes along that doesn’t just hint at what’s next—it detonates it in front of you. That car is the Czinger 21C VMax, a hypercar from a Southern California startup that has decided that the standard rules of engineering, design, and reality simply don’t apply. I had the chance to drive this machine on a three-day rally through the winding roads of Northern California, and frankly, I’m still recovering.
We’d been trying to get our hands on a Czinger for years. The parent company, Divergent Technologies, had been quietly pioneering additive manufacturing in the aerospace and defense sectors, creating components that were lighter, stronger, and more complex than anything traditional machining could produce. When they decided to apply that technology to a production hypercar, the entire industry took notice. I was fortunate enough to sit down with the father-and-son founders, Kevin and Lukas Czinger, on the InEVitable podcast back in 2022. Their vision was audacious: a car built using an iterative artificial intelligence (AI) design process, 3D-printed every step of the way, and assembled in a way that looked like it had landed from another planet.
But a concept is one thing. Driving it is another. The 21C isn’t just a track weapon; it’s a road-going statement about what’s possible when you throw the rulebook out the window. With the 21C VMax variant—a wingless, longer-tailed version of the full-tilt track weapon—I was tasked with a mission: a 500-mile road rally from Santa Barbara to Monterey. We weren’t just testing acceleration; we were testing usability, comfort, and, most importantly, the sanity of anyone who dares to drive this 1,250-horsepower hybrid beast on public roads. Spoiler alert: it blew my mind.
The Future is 3D-Printed
You can’t just walk into the Czinger factory; you need a government ID. This isn’t about VIP access; it’s because Divergent Technologies is a supplier to the Department of Defense. While I couldn’t see the actual military hardware, getting a tour from CEO Lukas Czinger was like being given a preview of the next century. Inside, I witnessed more than a dozen massive 3D printers transforming powdered aluminum into automotive components that looked less like metal parts and more like alien skeletons—geometric lattices of impossible strength and lightness.
Lukas explained that Divergent’s software reaches what they call the “Pareto Optimal” state. This is the point where any single gram, added or subtracted, becomes detrimental to performance. Imagine engineering a rear suspension reservoir mount. There’s a target volume to fill and a set of forces it must withstand. Using those parameters, the AI software runs hundreds of thousands of design iterations, building the part layer by layer. It’s like biological evolution on hyper-speed, creating organic-looking shapes that human engineers would never dream up.
Beyond the DOD, nine automotive OEMs rely on Divergent’s 3D printing technology. Names like Aston Martin (DBR22), Bugatti (Tourbillon), and McLaren (W1) openly admit to using their services, and while Ferrari hasn’t confirmed it, the control arms on the new F80 certainly look suspiciously 3D-printed. Czinger’s radical manufacturing approach isn’t just for show; it’s the foundation of everything the company does.
Under the Carbon Fiber: The Cabin and the Drivetrain
Czinger produces two versions of the same fundamentally radical platform. The standard 21C (named for the 21st century) is the high-downforce track monster. The VMax variant, which I piloted for this rally, is the long-tailed, wingless road-going version. It trades aerodynamic downforce for top-speed capability and a slightly less aggressive setup, though it remains a hypercar in the truest sense of the word.
The most striking aspect of the 21C VMax is its cockpit. Czinger refers to it as a “canopy,” and they aren’t exaggerating. It feels less like a car and more like the inside of a fighter jet. I’ve never flown a jet, but I did ride shotgun in an Extra 330LT stunt plane, and the similarities are uncanny. Glass is inches from your head on both sides, providing phenomenal visibility.
Getting in and out is… a performance art. You have to sit with your legs facing outward on the enormous sill, pull your knees up, and essentially spin on your butt as you contort your body into the narrow opening. It’s ridiculous, but strangely intoxicating.
One reason those sills are so substantial is that they house the batteries. The 21C VMax is a hybrid, with each sill containing 2.2 kWh of battery power for a total of 4.4 kWh. It’s not a plug-in hybrid, so the mid-mounted V-8 keeps the pack topped off. The electric motors on the front axle can provide 500 horsepower, while the engine itself is a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 developed by Czinger, good for 750 hp on California’s premium 91-octane fuel. Drop in 100-octane race fuel, and you hit 850 hp. Czinger is also developing ethanol-powered versions, which promise even more power, though they haven’t released the figures yet. We predict a 10 percent increase, but either way, this car is terrifyingly powerful.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through an Xtrac single-clutch automated semi-sequential gearbox. It’s similar to the Xtrac unit used in the Pagani Utopia, but Czinger takes it further. They 3D-print the transmission casing and use small 48-volt electric motors to execute shifts at low speeds. This eliminates the stuttering, jerky behavior common in other automated single-clutch transmissions. At low speeds, the twin-barrel actuators work as advertised, making parking, navigating traffic, and pulling into restaurants feel almost normal. It’s a level of refinement that’s astonishing for a car this extreme.
The Ghost in the Machine
For the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile road rally through Central and Northern California’s wine country, I found myself behind the wheel of a silver VMax. As is typical with high-end hypercars, Czinger assigned a professional driver, Evan Jacobs, to ride shotgun for the first day. In a $2.5 million car, you don’t mess around. Thankfully, the Czinger team soon realized I wasn’t a threat to their creation, and I was allowed to drive solo for the rest of the trip.
We stopped by Laguna Seca for some parade laps, but non-Czinger employees aren’t allowed to drive the VMax on the track, even at the restricted speeds of the rally. So, I jumped into the bizarre rear seat. If you have large calves or feet, the back seat is not comfortable. My XXL calves were practically fused between the carbon-fiber tub and the seat, and my feet didn’t fit well either. But the visibility through the side glass was incredible—a truly novel way to experience a track, even if I couldn’t drive.
Jacobs managed to convince the Skip Barber Racing School staff to let him take the VMax out for a couple of “6/10ths” hot laps. The most visceral experience I’ve ever had on a track was riding shotgun in an Aston Martin Valkyrie LMH race car, where the G-forces nearly pulled the blood out of my limbs under braking. The Czinger VMax is now second on that list. And remember, Jacobs wasn’t even going full tilt. Even without the massive rear wing and at less than maximum effort, it was easy to understand how a standard Czinger 21C achieved what the company calls the California Gold Rush.
In just five days, a Czinger 21C set five production car track records—at Thunder Hill, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club—and drove between each track to do it. Later, Czinger returned to Laguna Seca and not only beat its own record but reclaimed the outright throne from a Koenigsegg Jesko Sadair’s Spear. The lap time was a staggering 1 minute, 22.30 seconds. To put that into perspective, it’s faster than the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at Laguna, which was 1:22.56.
Czinger claims a vehicle weight of around 3,600 pounds. That’s incredibly light for a 1,250-hp hybrid. Consider the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano—the most powerful version of a three-motor, twin-turbo V-8 PHEV—which makes only 986 hp and weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor, twin-turbo V-8 (making less power, but the comparison holds), pushes past the two-ton mark at 4,185 pounds.
The SF90 and Temerario are the two quickest gasoline-powered cars MotorTrend has ever tested (Ferrari for 0-60
