Aston Martin Valhalla: A $1.1 Million Icon of Modern Performance
An astonishing 1,064 hp from a mid-engine, plug-in hybrid V-8 powertrain, a chassis forged from carbon fiber, and aerodynamic engineering that borrows directly from Formula 1 — it’s easy to forget the Aston Martin Valhalla is a road car. But it is, and it’s also a technical marvel.
If you’re the type of person who asks, “So, how was it?” of someone who has just spent time in a million-dollar, 1,064-hp supercar, you might be surprised by the answer. For a driving experience that Aston Martin calls its first true mid-engine supercar (though it blurs the line with hypercars thanks to its $1.1 million price tag and 999-unit production run), the Valhalla delivers performance that is both profound and, dare we say, nearly drama-free.
It is, quite simply, exactly how you’d expect it to be. But that’s only because the definition of “expected” has been rewritten by the impossible standards of 2025.
Seven Years in the Making
The Valhalla’s journey began seven years ago at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, when Aston Martin first unveiled the concept that was then dubbed the AM-RB 003. The name reflected the automaker’s then-sponsorship ties with Red Bull Racing.
Much has changed since then. Aston Martin parted ways with Red Bull Racing after the 2020 F1 season. More significantly, the automotive landscape evolved, as did Aston.
The Valhalla’s powertrain, originally conceived as an in-house-designed turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, was reimagined to compete with hybrid hypercars like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. The production model now utilizes a hybridized Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series-derived twin-turbo V-8, boosted by larger turbos, a new intake manifold, stronger pistons, and different camshafts to increase output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. Aston Martin states that this engine is exclusively used in the Valhalla.
When the first mockups were shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2022, projected specs for the V-8-based powertrain had jumped from 937 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque to 1,012 hp. While Aston cautioned that nothing was finalized, the numbers were already enough to make anyone sit up and pay attention.
A Marvel of Engineering
Based on Aston Martin’s original development timeline, another three and a half years would pass before the production version of the Valhalla would reach the press. And when it did, it exceeded all expectations.
The flat-plane-crank, dry-sump, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 produces a staggering 817 hp. This is supplemented by 248 hp from three Aston Martin-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet motors. One is mounted on the front axle, and another is integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The result is a peak output of 1,064 hp and 811 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to the electric motors, the hybrid system is powered by a 560-cell battery pack. Engineers confirmed that this is an off-the-shelf AMG battery, though it is the only component of the hybrid system not manufactured by Aston Martin. The battery cells are fully immersed in dielectric oil to manage heat. As chief engineer Andrew Kay explained, “We’re able to push energy into the battery and cycle it out very quickly [meaning recharge and deployment of electrical energy]. This is very good for track use, in particular.”
Unlike the original Valhalla concept and its Valkyrie sibling, the production model is a plug-in hybrid. It can drive in electric-only mode for up to 8.7 miles and reach an 80-mph top speed.
The Rise of the “Supercar”
The term “supercar” has taken on a new meaning in the 2020s. While the Valhalla is referred to by the company as its first-ever mid-engine supercar, it is indisputably a hypercar when compared to its closest competitors. The only factor preventing it from being called a hypercar is the existence of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which has forced Aston Martin’s marketing department to differentiate.
The Valkyrie, with its $3 million starting price and a production run of only 285 examples, makes the Valhalla’s $1.1 million price tag and 999-unit inventory seem, well, pedestrian. This is an absurd comparison, of course, but it speaks to the seismic shift that has occurred in high-performance automobiles.
For millennials, zoomers, and Gen Alpha, the concept of a million-dollar car appearing on social media monthly, if not weekly, is now commonplace. Each vehicle boasts unheard-of power, torque, acceleration, and lap times, as well as a list of technical specifications and bespoke options longer than the Nürburgring.
For those older than Gen Z, it’s easy to recall the shockwave delivered by something like the McLaren F1 in 1993-94 (627 hp, $800,000) or the Bugatti Veyron twenty years ago, generally considered the first million-dollar, 1,000-hp hypercar.
Today? Since the Valhalla prototype was shown at Pebble Beach, we’ve driven the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (half the power, similar complexity), the Ferrari F80, 849 Testarossa, and Czinger 21C VMax, along with the “normal but blindingly fast” Porsche 911 Turbo S. The automotive landscape has reached a point where Aston Martin has even introduced a hybrid Corvette ZR1X with 1,250 hp — a development that few could have imagined when the Valhalla was conceived.
Just Drive It
With the proliferation of ultra-performance cars, the adage “comparison is the thief of joy” has never been more relevant. It’s also coincidental in this case, as the odds of ever orchestrating a head-to-head comparison between these vehicles — other than the ZR1X — are slim. Ferrari’s longstanding refusal to lend publications like ours cars for head-to-head showdowns doesn’t help.
However, given the extreme dynamic limits of these cars, it is far more satisfying to appreciate a vehicle like the Valhalla on its own merits and savor the experience it provides.
The overall experience is paramount in these vehicles. It’s no longer enough for a car to be pleasant and thrilling on the road while performing like a sub-par piece of engineering on the track. Nor should a car be mesmerizing on the track but a chiropractor’s nightmare on the road. The Aston Martin Valhalla excels on all fronts.
On the Road: A True GT
For the initial drive, Aston Martin provided a 50-minute road loop through Spain. While the Valhalla’s pseudo-Le Mans Hypercar appearance and low-slung stance might suggest a compromised daily driver, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The only compromise is the luggage space. While there are small storage cubbies in the door cards, the frunk is unusable. This space is occupied by three high-temperature radiators, the electric motors, and a racing-style, pushrod-actuated horizontally mounted inboard suspension layout.
This suspension design is necessary due to the F1-style seating position. The driver sits so low that a conventional suspension would have raised the body too high to maintain a clear sightline. There is no backrest angle adjustment, so drivers must adapt to the seating position. The seats are bolted so low into the carbon-fiber monocoque tub that there is no motor beneath them for fore-and-aft adjustment. Instead, drivers pull a leather strap between their legs to move the seat forward or backward.
You get used to the driving position quickly, and within two miles, the Valhalla’s Bilstein DTX active damper system and suspension setup (the rear features a five-link layout) provide a surprisingly comfortable experience. The Spanish roads were not perfectly smooth, but they were well-maintained, and there was very little difference between the suspension’s Sport and Sport+ settings — a welcome, practical feature that Aston Martin has successfully executed on other new models. The Race mode introduces a harsher ride that would likely become tiresome during mundane cruising, but it is also livable, especially on a well-maintained, fast, sweeping road when it’s time to play.
The square steering wheel feels nice, but the molded-in crease/edge on the back that your fingers naturally bend around might not be comfortable for everyone. The steering feel is intuitive, maintaining a pleasant weight that is neither too light nor too heavy across all drive modes.
Straight Line Speed
When presented with a long, wide-open stretch of country road with no traffic, I brought the car to a stop, engaged launch control, and let the Valhalla unleash its power. After an initial slight rear-axle wiggle as the tires found grip, it was simply a matter of going. Aston Martin claims 0–62 mph in 2.5 seconds, which translates to roughly 0–60 mph in 2.4 to 2.3 seconds.
