Aston Martin Valhalla Review: A New Breed of Exotic Supercar “So, what was it like?” This is the predictable question everyone asks after you’ve experienced the 2026 Aston Martin Valhalla. For a million-dollar, 1,064-horsepower hybrid supercar, the answer is almost anti-climactic—yet completely extraordinary. For those of us who have spent years waiting, the 2026 Valhalla proves that the waiting was worth every single moment. It redefines what a supercar should be in the modern era of instant electric torque and extreme aerodynamics. A Long Time Coming: From AM-RB 003 to Valhalla It’s hard to believe it’s been seven years since the 2019 Geneva Motor Show where Aston Martin first unveiled the car then known as the AM-RB 003. That name, which has since been replaced by the Norse mythological term Valhalla (meaning “hall of the chosen dead warriors”), reflected Aston’s sponsorship ties with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team. However, a lot has changed since then. Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing parted ways after the 2020 Formula 1 season when Lawrence Stroll bought Racing Point and rebranded it as the Aston Martin team. But the most significant changes were within the automotive landscape itself, and specifically within Aston Martin. There was a significant turnover within the internal ranks, and the planned powertrain, which was supposed to be an in-house designed turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 (matching the hybrid hypercars of the time like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder), was transformed.
Instead, the Aston Martin Valhalla now utilizes a hybrid powertrain based on the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series twin-turbo V-8. Aston engineers upgraded the GT Black Series engine with larger turbos, a new intake manifold, stronger pistons, and different camshafts, boosting the power output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. This engine is now exclusive to the Valhalla and is at the heart of its performance capabilities. When I sat in a mock-up of the car on the Pebble Beach Concours lawn back in August 2022, I was grinning at the Valhalla’s F1-inspired reclined and elevated-leg seating position. The projected specifications had already increased from a combined 937 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque to 1,012 hp and an undisclosed torque figure. These were not final numbers, Aston said, but they were more than enough to make me ask, “Please, I want to drive it, whenever it’s ready.” The Wait Was Worth It… Based on what Aston Martin shared at the time about the Valhalla’s development cycle, I didn’t expect another three and a half years to pass before I got the chance. However, the production version’s hardware exceeds all those earlier expectations. The flat-plane crank, dry-sump, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 generates 817 horsepower. This is combined with a total of 248 horsepower from three Aston Martin-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet motors. One is located on the front axle, and a third is mounted to and works within the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, a first for Aston. The combined output reaches 1,064 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque. Along with the motors, the hybrid system is powered by a 560-cell battery pack. Engineers confirm it’s an off-the-shelf AMG battery that represents the only part of the hybrid system Aston doesn’t manufacture. This pack is cooled by immersing the cells completely in dielectric oil. The simplified benefit of this technology, as chief engineer Andrew Kay explained, is that “we’re able to push energy into the battery and cycle it out very quickly (meaning recharge and deploy electrical energy). This is very good for track use, in particular.” Unlike the original Valhalla concept and its big brother, the Valkyrie, the production model is also a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It can operate in EV-only mode for up to 8.7 miles at a top speed of 80 mph. …But Something Else Happened Along the Way Some critics have argued about whether the Valhalla should be called a supercar or a hypercar. Aston Martin itself refers to it as its first-ever mid-engine supercar. However, given the existence of the Valkyrie, marketing descriptions are forced into a corner where “super” is preferred over “hyper.” Regardless, the Valkyrie is hardly a street-legal car. Its starting price of over $3 million and a production run of only 285 units make the Valhalla’s million-plus MSRP and 999-unit inventory seem relatively modest by comparison. Of course, this statement sounds absurd in the real world, but it speaks to a larger shift in the realm of modern high-performance automobiles, both in terms of price and capability.
Perhaps the younger generations—Millennials, Zoomers, and Gen Alpha—are already used to seeing another million-dollar car appear on their social media feeds almost weekly. Each one boasts never-before-heard power and torque figures, acceleration and lap times, and a list of tech specs, features, options, and bespoke luxury choices longer than the Nürburgring’s full endurance layout. However, for those of us who are a bit older but not quite AARP members, it’s easy to recall the shockwave dealt by something like the 627-hp, $800,000-ish McLaren F1 back in 1993–1994. Even more so, the Bugatti Veyron a mere 20 years ago, which is generally considered the first million-dollar, 1,000-hp hypercar. Today? Since the day I sat in the Valhalla prototype at Pebble Beach, we have driven cars such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. This car has about half the horsepower and overall “exotic” technology, but it brings so much racing-derived aerodynamics and other hardware to the fight that it requires pro-racer skills to maximize on a racetrack. Its suitability as a road car, given its suspension setup, is debatable. Stepping up, to varying degrees, in price, construction, and tech, we have sampled the Ferrari F80, 849 Testarossa, Czinger 21C VMax, and even the more “standard but dizzyingly fast” Porsche 911 Turbo S, to name just a few. You can even buy a hybrid Corvette ZR1X with 1,250 horsepower, which no one saw coming when the Valhalla was a brilliant spark in Aston Martin’s and then-Red Bull F1 design genius Adrian Newey’s (now Aston F1 managing technical partner) collective eyes. Just Drive It: 0-60 and The New Era It’s fitting that Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” because it has never been more appropriate in supercar terms. It’s also fitting because we know the odds of ever orchestrating a proper comparison test among the vehicles listed above, perhaps other than the ZR1X, are zero. This is mostly thanks to Maranello’s long-standing aversion to providing publications like ours with cars for head-to-head showdowns. (Shame on you, Ferrari.) No matter. Given how high the dynamic limits are, it is far more satisfying to drive something like the Valhalla on its own merits and for whatever experience it provides. Make no mistake; the overall experience matters in a car like this. For quite a while, it hasn’t been good enough to be pleasant and thrilling on the road but perform like understeering crap on the racetrack, or be mesmerizing on the track but deliver a chiropractor’s billable-hours wet dream on the road. We already knew that the Aston Martin Valhalla was a winner on all fronts after Angus MacKenzie sampled a “prototype” that was pretty much the finished article (save for some transmission calibration) a few months prior. On the Road: Aston Martin Valhalla Performance Unlike Angus, who only drove it on the Silverstone Circuit’s short Stowe layout in the UK, Aston this time provided us with a 50-minute road loop. You might naturally look at the Valhalla’s pseudo-Le Mans Hypercar appearance and low, wide stance and expect a compromised daily driver, but that’s not at all the case. Other than the utter lack of luggage storage (there are some small cubbies in the door cards but no frunk due to the space being occupied by three high-temp radiators, the electric motors, and a racing-style, pushrod-actuated horizontally mounted inboard suspension layout), it is incredibly practical.
Aston executed the suspension solution partly because of the F1-style driving position. You sit so low that a conventional suspension would have raised the bodywork’s height too much to maintain an entirely clear sightline ahead. There’s no backrest angle adjustment, so you must adapt to the seating position. The seats are bolted so low into the carbon-fiber monocoque tub that there’s no motor beneath them to slide yourself forward and back. Instead, you pull a leather strap between your legs and push to and fro to make those adjustments.
