The Aston Martin Valhalla: A Masterpiece of Modern Hypercar Engineering
“So, what was it like?!”
An obvious, perhaps inevitable, question to pose to someone who’s just experienced Aston Martin’s nearly $1.1 million, 1,064-horsepower Valhalla. Yet this long-standing tradition of automotive journalism reviewing supercars has, in recent times, taken an even more acutely surreal turn.
So much so that when multiple friends and colleagues asked me that same question the day after driving the 2026 Aston Martin Valhalla, I hesitated briefly before replying with a variation of, “Er, exactly as you would expect.” I quickly recognized that while this wasn’t meant dismissively, it only truly makes sense if you’ve been fortunate enough to experience the state of the art in supercars here in the once inconceivable 2020s.
A Long Time in the Making
Seven years feels like more than a lifetime ago, exacerbated by the disorienting isolation of the pandemic years that, for many, rendered time less linear. But that’s how long it’s been since the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, where Aston first unveiled what was then known as the AM-RB 003.
That original name, later changed to one from Norse mythology—Valhalla being the glorious afterlife realm where heroic fallen warriors prepare for an epic final battle; it also conveniently begins with a V, fitting Aston’s naming conventions—was a nod to the automaker’s sponsorship ties with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team.
Much has changed since, and not just the name. Aston and Red Bull parted ways after the 2020 F1 season when Aston’s new leader, Lawrence Stroll, renamed his Racing Point F1 team to carry the legendary British marque’s banner. More significantly, the automotive landscape was evolving rapidly, and so was Aston Martin.
The company saw internal upheaval, and the Valhalla’s hybrid powertrain—initially conceived as an in-house 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine designed to match the performance of relevant hybrid hypercars like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder—was ultimately reimagined as a hybridized twin-turbo V8 derived from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Compared to the standard AMG engine, Aston engineered it with larger turbos, a new intake manifold, reinforced pistons, and different camshafts, boosting output by nearly 100 hp and 50 lb-ft. This engine is now exclusively found in the Valhalla.
The Transformation of a Vision
When I sat in a mockup of the car on the Pebble Beach Concours lawn in August 2022, captivated by the Valhalla’s F1-inspired, reclined seating position with raised legs, the projected powertrain specs had already climbed from a combined 937 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque to 1,012 hp and an undisclosed torque figure. Aston stressed these weren’t finalized, but they were more than enough to compel me to say, “Please, I want to drive it, whenever it’s ready.”
Following the timeline set by Aston Martin during its initial development cycle, I hadn’t expected another three and a half years to pass before getting behind the wheel. However, the production version’s hardware now exceeds all those earlier expectations.
The flat-plane-crank, dry-sump, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 produces 817 hp. When combined with 248 hp from three Aston-designed radial-flux permanent-magnet motors—one on the front axle and a third mounted to and integrated within the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (a first for Aston)—the peak outputs reach 1,064 hp and 811 lb-ft.
Complementing the motors is a hybrid system featuring a 560-cell battery pack. Engineers confirm it’s an off-the-shelf AMG battery, the only component of the hybrid system Aston doesn’t manufacture. The cells are cooled by immersion in dielectric oil. In simple terms, as chief engineer Andrew Kay explained, “We’re able to push energy into the battery and cycle it out very quickly [meaning rapid recharge and deployment of electrical energy]. This is very good for track use, in particular.”
Unlike the initial concept and its larger sibling, the Valkyrie, the production model is a plug-in hybrid, capable of traveling in EV-only mode for up to 8.7 miles with a maximum speed of 80 mph.
A Paradigm Shift in Performance
For the more meticulous automotive enthusiast, the term “supercar” might feel like an understatement. However, Aston Martin itself refers to the Valhalla as its first-ever mid-engine supercar. It feels more like a hypercar, doesn’t it?
Yes, except for the existence of the Valkyrie. This complicates marketing definitions and talking points around “first ever” achievements, pushing Aston toward “super” rather than “hyper” as the preferred prefix. Regardless of the terminology, the Valkyrie is barely a street car. With a starting price of over $3 million and a limited production run of just 285 units, the Valhalla’s price tag of around a million dollars and production volume of 999 units suddenly seem relatively tame by comparison.
Of course, in the real world, that statement is absurd. But it speaks to a larger phenomenon in the realm of modern high-performance automobiles—both in terms of cost and capability.
Perhaps the millennial, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha car enthusiasts among us are now accustomed to seeing another million-dollar car fill their social media feeds almost weekly. Each one churns out previously unthinkable power and torque figures, acceleration and lap times, and a list of tech specs, features, options, and bespoke luxury choices longer than the Nürburgring’s full endurance circuit.
For those who are older, but certainly not elderly, it’s easy to recall the seismic shock delivered by the 627-hp McLaren F1 back in 1993–94, priced around $800,000. Or even more recently, the Bugatti Veyron just 20 years ago, generally regarded as the first million-dollar, 1,000-hp hypercar.
Nowadays? Since the day I sat in the Valhalla prototype at Pebble Beach, we have, for instance, driven the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It has only about half the horsepower and overall exotic tech but incorporates so much racing-derived aerodynamics and hardware that it demands professional-racer skills to extract its maximum potential on a track. Its suitability as a road car, given its suspension setup, is certainly debatable.
Stepping up in price, construction, and technological prowess, MotorTrend has sampled the Ferrari F80, the 849 Testarossa, the Czinger 21C VMax, and even the more “mainstream but blindingly fast” Porsche 911 Turbo S, to name just a few. You can even purchase a hybrid Corvette ZR1X producing 1,250 hp—something few predicted when the Valhalla was merely a brilliant concept in the minds of Aston Martin and then-Red Bull F1 design guru Adrian Newey (who is now Aston’s F1 managing technical partner).
The Freedom of Experience
Whether or not Teddy Roosevelt originated the phrase, “comparison is the thief of joy” is more relevant than ever in the context of hypercars… ahem, supercars. It’s also fitting here because we know the chances of organizing a proper comparison test among the vehicles mentioned above—perhaps with the exception of the ZR1X—are essentially zero. This is largely due to Ferrari’s long-standing reluctance to provide publications like ours with cars for head-to-head comparisons. (Looking at you, Ferrari.)
Regardless, given the extraordinarily high performance limits of these cars, it’s far more satisfying to drive something like the Valhalla on its own merits and appreciate the experience it provides.
Make no mistake; the overall experience is paramount in a car like this. For quite some time, it hasn’t been enough for a car to be pleasant and thrilling on the road but handle like an understeering mess on the track, or be mesmerizing on track but induce a chiropractic consultation on the road. We already knew, mostly, that this Aston Martin was a winner on all fronts after MotorTrend’s Angus MacKenzie sampled a “prototype” that was virtually the finished article, minus some transmission calibration, a few months prior.
Driving the Valhalla on the Road
Unlike Angus, who only drove it on the Silverstone Circuit’s short Stowe layout in the U.K., Aston provided us with a 50-minute road loop to begin. You might naturally look at the Valhalla’s Le Mans Hypercar-style appearance and low, wide stance and expect a compromised daily driver, but that’s not the case at all. At least, aside from the total lack of luggage storage; there are some small cubbies in the door cards, but no frunk because that potential cargo space is consumed by three high-temperature radiators, the electric motors, and a racing-style, pushrod-actuated, horizontally mounted inboard suspension layout.
Aston implemented this suspension solution partly because of the F1-style driving position. You sit so low that a conventional suspension would have raised the bodywork too much to maintain clear forward visibility. There’s no backrest angle adjustment, so you must adapt to the seating position. The seats are bolted so low into the carbon-fiber monocoque
